Low fat diet

Patients with MCAD deficiency are recommended to follow a healthy, low fat diet.

In terms of percentage the following is recommended:
  • 10-15 % proteins
  • 30-35% fat
  • 50-55% carbohydrates
Medium-chain fatty acids occur a lot in coconut oil, palm oil, and also the milk of bovine animals and sheep.
Healthy food contains mostly long-chain fatty acids.
A patient with MCAD deficiency can partially break down long-chain fatty acids.
Also essential fatty acids are required in the diet.
So a relatively low fat diet is not the same as a no fat diet!
